Welcome to TamayoINKception!

Thank you so much for visiting. I truly appreciate your support.

NATURAL ART MATERIALS

All of my works are hand-painted, and all the materials I use are 100% natural. I use superfine Sumi, a traditional Japanese ink stick made from tree ash and natural glues, which I rub on a top-quality Suzuri ink stone to create black ink. I then paint on exquisite Japanese Washi paper or antique kimono silk fabric. The finished pieces are carefully backed with Washi paper by skilled artisans to make them thick enough for framing, sometimes as traditional folding screens or hanging scrolls.

For clothing items, I use a fixing solution in Sumi ink to make the fabrics washable and thus usable. My silk scarves have smooth and soft texture by those traditional and eco-friendly materials and techniques.

PROFOUND PHILOSOPHY

Besides creating and teaching painting, I work as a writer and translator specializing in art, with a deep knowledge of Japanese art and its religious background. I have found healing and empowerment through art and hope that people attain inner peace and liberate their minds through my artworks. These pieces blend traditional artistry with modern sensibilities and explore the elegant and revered Japanese art form, meticulously crafted to bring tranquility and grace to any space.

As it is believed in Japan that humans are part of nature, ink painting utilizes natural materials, with factors such as humidity and temperature affecting the artwork. While carefully controlling the amount of water and ink, I also let nature guide part of the process. The range of tones in black ink creates delicate atmospheres and allows viewers to imagine colors beyond black. Zen ink paintings, in particular, use brushstrokes to convey celestial energy, with lines that can be powerful or delicate. They appeal to the senses, allowing viewers to envision the brush gliding across the paper and the spread of ink and water. Pure, unhesitant lines clear the heart and convey enlightenment.

My artworks embody deep meanings from East Asian culture, often representing auspicious signs and symbols of good fortune, warding off misfortune, the harmony of yin and yang, wisdom, social success, prosperity of offspring, longevity, and more.

When I wrote scripts for Kimono Exhibition, I firstly knew that Sumi-e on Kimono was a fashion in a short period in the Edo period, which is most likely forgotten nowadays in Japan. In the early Edo period in Japan, Kimono with Sumi-e painting was the fashion called Kakie-kosode. Aristocratic women desired original and unique paintings and organized gatherings like fashion shows of today displaying painted Kimonos by famous painters. Hand painted Kimono is called Musen-Yuzen, and is regarded as a root of Yuzen – a very common printing technique on Kimono.

STORY

Over 25 years ago, while studying art history in college, I was moved by the Japanese Sumi-e paintings of a 14th-century Zen Buddhist monk Kaou and began studying under a master painter Meguro Souu in Tokyo. Later, shortly after arriving in London to study at Camberwell College of Arts, I painted at a flea market, where a little girl joined me. Her father invited me to sell my works at his wife's boutique. The following week, while painting in the store, fashion buyers approached me, marking the start of my business.

I have had solo exhibitions and on-stage painting performances in Tokyo, New York, and Frankfurt. I have been featured on TV, as well as in various web and magazine articles.
